Josef Langston

I am Josef Langston, my style of painting is Impressionist, my favorite medium is Oil. I enjoy painting, I've painted on Canvas and panels also. I was 12 years young when I started Oil Painting on panels. At 87 years old I find myself painting again on panels. I'm going to put my feeling down on how I feel about paintings, please grasp my thoughts, not my English grammar.

Michelangelo, Leonardo de Vinci, two giants we'll never see the likes of again, Caravaggio started us painting the way we still try to paint like.

Rafael, Rembrandt, and Vermeer advance the art, Learning from what Caravaggio taught us in his short 33 years of life, advanced painting to what we create today.

"Painting is Poetry that is seen rather then felt, Poetry is Painting that is felt rather then seen." Leonardo de Vinci. I was rather fortunate that I had the good fortune to be born into a military family. I was in Germany in 1952 as a dependent,  went to school in Rhein- Main & Frankfurt, Germany for 3 years. I was exposed to the great works of art by all the great old masters.

When I came back to the states, enlisted in the army was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, I went to the 82d Airborne Museum, and there hanging on the wall was a large oil painting of a german paratrooper unit in action, beautifully done, you got the feeling of the excitement on the battle field, smell the gun powder in the air, great art work. No photograph could ever capture that excitement.

For me, even at tender age of 12, standing in front of a master piece, I felt the presents of that artist, knowing I was sharing the same space he did painting his work of art, like a time warp, it was like looking through his eyes. I knew that that was my calling, even if I never reach their level of excellence, I would try. See what happens when you stand in front of a master piece in a museum. Remind me of a tombstone that read,"where you are, I was also, where I am, you to shall be.", but in a pleasant way, all this standing in front of a canvas.

I know that only after at least 50 or 75 years, future generations will judge our labors on the canvas on our easels. Just look at Vincent van Gould, and countless other artist that poured their souls on to their artworks. So paint on fellow artist, keep on and create your own works of art.

I hope you enjoy the fruit of my labors in this web-site, life is a learning experience, you can see mine in my works, but I truly enjoy journey, not knowing the destination or caring, as long as we satisfy our self with the results.

I know that i have been contacted by persons that have a painting of mine that i painted 50 or 60 years ago, I am surprised that they were able to reach me, some from Europe or the East Coast. The computer age as made it possible to search through the ages & space to track a piece of artwork.
